Since leaving the "Iron Man" franchise, Jon Favreau has mostly kept himself busy with cowboys, aliens and a very special team of superheroes. The actor-director-producer has recently been focusing on the "actor" and "producer" parts, starring in movies like "People Like Us" and "Iron Man 3" and producing "The Avengers."

Favreau was supposedly planning his return to the director's chair with "The Magic Kingdom," a Disney-fied take on "Night at the Museum," but a new report from Variety pegs him as the frontrunner for another high-profile projet.

Variety is reporting that Favreau is now the favorite to helm the big screen adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, "Jersey Boys."

The announcement largely came as a surprise since this is the first time that the director's name has been publically attached to the project, and it would be Favreau's first foray into the musical arena.

John Logan, the writer behind "Hugo" and Spielberg's "Lincoln," is scripting the musical, which tells the story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.
