Macklemore got major kudos for standing up for LGBTQ rights with his VMA-winning song "Same Love," and the rapper continues to take a stand for important issues. This time around he's standing up for the rights of all Americans by getting involved with the ACLU.
+ Watch Macklemore Flaunt His ACLU Card.
ACLU stands for American Civil Liberties Union, and Macklemore explains why it's so important to support them.
"I've got a lot of things to do during the day," he said. "So something like being beaten with a club, pepper-sprayed, and tased for expressing my political views would really slow me down. And that's why I carry the ACLU card. It's the only card that lets my gay friends marry the hell out of each other. The card that says, 'Hey, girl, it's your vagina, and you should be able to do what you want with it.' The card that lets me call the president a dick on the internet if I wanted to. And I don't want to, but I could."
To translate from Macklemorese: the ACLU supports LGBTQ rights, it supports the right of women to make decisions about their reproductive systems without government intervention, and it supports the right of free speech. All good stuff!
Macklemore is also taking part in a contest sponsored by the ACLU. If you become a member of the ACLU from now till November 29, you'll get a free T-shirt. Annnd . . . you might even win two tix plus meet and greet passes to see Macklemore perform at Seattle in December. LGBTQ rights, women's rights, free speech and a Macklemore concert? Yes, please!
