Uh, did you know that every five minutes, Americans throw out enough plastic bottles to fill eight football fields? Ooof.
And that's not even counting all the bags, straws, and other plastic materials we use. Thankfully, Think Beyond Plastic is awarding $50,000 to an entrepreneur who can come up with a solution to reduce this problem.
The Think Beyond Plastic competition is being put on by the Plastic Pollution Coalition, and it's sponsored by awesome magazines like Rolling Stone and events like Bonnaroo! We can't help but wonder if Bonaroo headliner and environmentalist Paul McCartney had anything to do this with this!
You have until March 18 to get your applications in, and you could win a $50,000 investment if you have an existing business. There's also a $10,000 investment available for the "most innovative business idea." A jury made up of industrialists and scientists (they know what's really good) will be looking over the applications to make their decision. Winners will be announced in June.
The Plastic Pollution Coalition puts on this contest every year. Even if you're not a businessperson or entrepreneur, going to their website can still teach you loads on the plastic pollution issue and how to help better the situation. For instance, did you know that 93% of plastics are not recycled? While the Coalition acknowledges the importance of recycling, it also knows that just encouraging recycling is not going to fix this problem. There are different projects you can get involved with to help. And to all you applicants for the contest -- good luck! We totally look forward to seeing what you come up with! And maybe Paul McCartney does too?!
