It was a surprisingly good weekend to be Bruce Willis. The fifth film in the "Die Hard" series, despite atrocious reviews and a TomatoMeter reading of 16 percent, won the holiday box office by a nose with $29.3 million, over the returning champions of Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy in "Identity Thief," which took in $27.8 million.
Two other debuts performed moderately well. The latest Nicholas Sparks adaptation, "Safe Haven," and the animated family film "Escape from Planet Earth" came in third and fourth place, respectively. The romance starring Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough grabbed $25 million, with "Escape" taking in $21 million.
The biggest disappointment of the weekend goes to the YA newbie, "Beautiful Creatures." The adaptation only managed to scrounge up $8.9 million. The take will likely put any plans to continue adapting the book series by authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl on hold.
