Like any good year at the movies, 2012's biggest films had twists and turns that none of us could have predicted and some that everyone saw coming. That didn't stop them from thrilling us every step of the way and making us gasp a little when the reveal finally came.

The most shocking surprise in 2012 that everyone kind of knew was coming. Who was the mysterious, seemingly normal John Blake. Sure, he's a Gotham beat cop, one of the last few good ones in the city, but could that really be all? You don't hire Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play some random police officer without some grander scheme in mind. When that other shoe finally dropped, fans were left with Nolan's take on the Boy Wonder and something else to debate. What now?
…Moneypenny
Whereas "Casino Royale" blew up the house that was the James Bond series, "Skyfall" slowly began to rebuild it, and that meant bringing back the old standbys. From the start, we knew Q would be back, albeit much younger. There would always be an M; whether s/he continued to be Dame Judi Dench was another matter. The only other missing piece had to be 007's witty equal, Miss Moneypenny. Naomie Harris slipped into the role nicely, and by the end of the film, we welcomes Moneypenny back with open arms.
That Whole 'Cabin in the Woods' Thing
Honestly, it still feels wrong to openly discuss the details of this beyond brilliant twist. Please, please, please, if you haven't seen "Cabin in the Woods," go do so. Good movies are meant to be seen. While it's less of a twist and more of a gradual reveal, the truth behind the cabin stepped into the light in a way that was both surprising and endlessly clever. It stands as an example of what all twists should be, logical surprises that have lingering impacts on how the work as a whole is viewed.
Oh…It's An 'Alien' Prequel
It's not a prequel. It's not a prequel. It's most definitely a prequel, just not the one you were expecting. At the very start of production, "Ridley Scott's 'Alien' prequel" became "Ridley Scott's 'Alien' non-prequel," and the world of movie geekdom became enthralled in debate about whether or not we'd see face-huggers, chest-bursters, and a xenomorph or two. In the end, we got a story that had little to do with "Alien," aside from the shoe-horned origin of the xenomorph, which surprisingly still manages to confuse people.
Wait, It Was An Alice Vision?
Have you ever heard of room full of teenage girls suffer minor aneurysms simultaneously? If not, you didn't attend an opening weekend screening of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2." It all went down near the end of the film, when the epic final battle and its many tragic deaths are revealed to be a vision of a possible future that Alice shares with Michael Sheen. Things got scary.
