2,000 young people representing over 126 nations have joined forces with the United Nations and a number of entertainment, non-profit and other industry leaders to debut the mPowering Mobile Platform -- an app aimed at inspiring youth around the world to better their lives and the lives of others. Timbaland, Avicii, and Agnes Monica were on site at yesterday's unofficial launch.
"The mPowering Mobile Platform is an app that gives young people in every country the resources to make their lives better, through their mobile phone," Jeff Martin, CEO of Tribal Brands, the company behind the app, told us. To join the mPowering movement, users will be able download a free app on which they can share stories, stream exclusive music by participating artists (like Timbaland!), access education, job, and health resources, and browse a database of non-profits to give or get help anywhere in the world.
"I think young people feel like their voice won't be heard so they don't bother to speak out," electro DJ and producer Avicii told us. "In order for people to get involved they need to feel their actions will actually make a difference."
Young people constitute 43% of the world's population (in countries like Brazil, Nigeria and Tanzania, we make up as much as 60%!), so our voices and actions can absolutely make an impact -- but only if we get involved. The UN wants to make sure of that. "Recognizing that youth make up nearly half the world's population," added Kwabena Osei-Danquah, Executive Coordinator for the UN's ICPD Beyond 2014, [The UN] has a specific focus on youth and the issues that matter most to them."
The mPowering Mobile Platform will be officially launched on February 8th, 2013, during Grammys Week in Los Angeles. In the meantime, you can leave comments on the platform's Facebook page or @mPoweringAction on Twitter -- what issues should Avicii, Timbaland, and the mPowering team focus on? They'll be listening!
