Bimonthly, we'll take an artist on the rise on the MTV Music Meter and, to help you discover them a little more, detail some of their philanthropic tendencies -- from Mika to Ellie Goulding. This week, Lana Del Rey!
Hipster diva and "Video Games" singer Lana Del Rey is heating up the MTV Mainstream Music Meter today, sitting at an ironic 11. She was only a bit ago at the top of the charts, then decided "1" would be too mainstream. While many hipsters loathe her growing popularity (because it really sucks when your favorite musicians can finally afford to pay their rent…), we've always been on the Lana bandwagon. Here's why:
+ She Handles Bullying with Class
Haters have criticized Lana's voice and appearances, but she has never lashed out at them. Lana's actually dealt with bullies for a long time. In a recent interview with KROQ, she explained, "I've never really had it easy in that regard, in terms of people just letting things fly. So this is nothing new to me." In response to her highly criticized SNL gig, Lana said, "I don't usually regret anything I do. I liked my performance." Lana is a great example of how all of us should handle being bullied: Stay classy. Stay confident. Get rich.
+ She Teaches The Past & Predicts The Future
In her new video for "National Anthem," Lana and A$AP Rocky play Jackie O and JFK. Not only does Lana give fans a lesson in the past, but she also predicts the future with a biracial First Family. Do you know that, until 1967, interracial marriage was illegal in America?! Lana's Nouveau First Family is a beautiful example of our growingly diverse nation, and may even be foreshadowing the future of American politics.
+ She Gives Back To Her Fans
From consoling crying fans in Paris to hanging with another living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2, Lana Del Rey is so good to her people. If you see Lana on the streer and only have a moment to get her attention, it looks like crying would definitely be your best bet. Not much of a bawler?
