At this point, it seems safe to say that the Minions in "Despicable Me" are the true stars of that movie, and now they're going to get their own.
Though they were originally only adorable secondary characters who help out Steve Carell's animated character Gru, the Minions have gone on to be the most recognizable faces of the series and get their own Universal Orlando themepark ride. With "Despicable Me 2" gearing up, Deadline is reporting that DreamWorks is prepping a spin-off movie that will center around Gru's sidekicks.
Apparently the studio is planning the release of "Despicable Me 2" and this untitled movie a year apart. It's unclear how exactly the Minions will make their own film work since, you know, they don't exactly speak English, but Illumination Entertainment's Chris Meledandri has reportedly come up with a way around that with directors Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, and "Despicable Me 2" co-director Chris Renaud.
The "Despicable Me" ride only recently opened at Universal Orlando, but apparently it's been met with a great reception. It helps that "Despicable Me" was a massive success for DreamWorks, which is nice for the studio since it didn't cost much to make. The sequel has Steve Carell, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand and Kristen Wiig reprising their roles from the first film, with the new addition of Al Pacino. It will be interesting to see how many of those actors' characters are incorporated into the Minion movie, if any. DreamWorks is likely planning how to make "Despicable Me 2" tie into the spin-off now.
