If you are a girl who has ever dreamed of becoming an astronaut, chances are you wanted to be Sally Ride, who sadly passed away this Monday. Sally unfortunately lost her battle to pancreatic cancer, but left behind a legacy that will inspire us for years to come.

She became the first American woman in space back in 1983, was a pioneer for women in the sciences, and her obituary taught us something more: she was a member of the LGBT community. With her blessing, it read, "She is survived by Tam O'Shaughnessy, her partner of 27 years." In honor of Sally's inspiring lifetime, here are a few other amazing female firsts:

+ Hattie McDaniel: The first African American to win an Academy Award

Hattie McDaniel was the first African American to win an Oscar way back in 1940! She won the award for best supporting actress for her role as Hattie in classic flick "Gone With The Wind." In 2002, Halle Berry became the first African American woman to win Best Actress for her role in "Monster Ball."

+ Katy Perry: The first female artists to score 5 #1 songs on 1 album

In 2011, Katy Perry made history as the first woman to have 5 No. 1 hits on the same album. Now she's dominating the film world with her film "Part of Me" in theaters now.

+ Victoria Woodhull: The first woman to run for President

In 1872, Victoria Woodhull became the first female to run for U.S. President. Women couldn't even vote until 1918, so Victoria's decision to run was waaaay ballsy. Although she didn't win the election, she opened the door for other women in the male-dominated politics world.

+ Beyonce: The first woman to win 6 Grammys in one night

In 2010, Queen B broke the record for most Grammys won by a female artist in one night. She won 6 of them! How much do you wanna bet B and Jay's daughter Blue Ivy will have a Grammy before she can even talk?

+ Sandra Day O'Connor: The first woman to sit on the Supreme Court bench:

Sandra Day O'Connor became America's first female Supreme Court justice in 1981 and has impacted all of our present and future lives with her tie-breaking opinions on affirmative action, religious freedom, abortion rights, the death penalty.

+ Emma Stone: MTV's first Trailblazer

At this year's MTV Movie Awards, Emma Stone received the very first Trailblazer honor. The "Spiderman" actress gave a beautiful acceptance speech about learning to love ourselves exactly as we are.

+ Amelia Earhart: The first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean

Amelia Earhart may look like just another Brooklyn hipster, but she's so much more than that. Amelia was the first aviatrix ("Aviatrix" = female aviator. Ya learn something new every day!) to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set tons of flying records and helped form The Ninety-Nines -- an organization for the advancement female pilots.
