Full disclosure: I'm not into comic books, super heroes, or anything like that. Sorry. Wait, I'm into comic strips like Garfield and Peanuts. Does that count?! And there is ONE comic I'm currently obsessed with: The Silver Scorpion. He's like no other, and our friends over at MTV Voices premiered an animated series with him.
So you're probably wondering, WHO IS THE SILVER SCORPION? IS HE THE NEXT WOLVERINE?!?! Here's the deal: Silver Scorpion is the first disabled superhero in the game. He's also an Arabic teenager that goes by the name of Bashir Bari. He lost his legs in an accident and eventually realizes that he has the power to control metal with his mind!
Coolest part about the scorpion isn't the awesome animation or story lines (but those are reaaallly good too) it's the fact that he was created by disabled American and Syrian students. In August 2010, the Open Hands Initiative hosted a Youth Ability Summit. Kids from American and Syria discussed the rights of disabled people as well as brainstorming comic book ideas and BOOM! Silver Scorpion was born. Liquid Comics help make the comic book character come to life.
Former prez Bill Clinton said it best when he talked about the comic (yeah, it's a big deal): "The comic book will help to establish trust and understanding between cultures, to empower young people with disabilities." So check out the first episode starring the Silver Scorpion.
