During a recent episode of "Real World St. Thomas," Brandon tells Swift he "was just doing so many fucking drugs it's so nice to not be doing anything," reflecting on his time on the island so far. But things proved to be too much for Brandon who found himself sent home after testing positive for cocaine.
In the previous episode, Swift gave Brandon props for his six months of sobriety. "Now I look forward to being sober from everything," Brandon responded, referring to his alcohol use. "Permenately." But when producers went in for a random drug test during last night's episode, Brandon was found with cocaine in his system -- much to the roommates surprise.
As much as friends can be there for each other to support during trying times, cases of substance abuse can require the attention of a health professional. It is important to understand that unaddressed emotional health problems can have serious consequences -- and using drugs and alcohol to escape only escalates that. But there are many free resources available online, via phone and, if needed, in person.
If you or a friend struggling with substance abuse can answer "yes" to at least one of these questions, there could be a problem and going for a professional evaluation is suggested:
+ Have you ever felt that you should cut down on your drinking or drug use?
+ Have people annoyed you by criticizing your use?
+ Have you ever felt bad or guilty about it?
+ Have you ever had a drink or used drugs first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover?
