Like any year at the movies, we lost a lot of good characters in 2012. Some were more expected than others. Some caught us completely by surprise. Some were beautifully telegraphed, and we watched them unfold in a hilariously unstoppable train wreck.

These are the most shocking movie character deaths of 2012!

M (Judi Dench) in "Skyfall"
After seven movies as the world's "mum," Judi Dench hung up her ceramic bulldog and called it a day as M. She had a hell of a run as the head of MI6, and if your demise makes James Bond cry, you know you meant something to the world.

Coulson (Clark Gregg) in "The Avengers"
We figured someone was going down—this after all is a Joss Whedon movie—but we didn't want to believe it. It wasn't until Loki's staff went through this poor Captain America fanboy's chest that the reality set in. At least he didn't go out like a chump.

Curt (Chris Hemsworth) in "The Cabin in the Woods"
Speaking of going out like a chump, we all foresaw Hemworth's Curt crashing head-first into that invisible grid fence, but for a brief moment, maybe we thought the supposed leading man could be saved. Not quite. Not in "Cabin in the Woods," at least.

Basically the entire cast in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2"
Twi-hards were warned ahead of time that Bill Condon's conclusion to the paranormal teen romance series would feature a different ending from the book. What fans were not expecting was to see nearly every one of their beloved characters ripped to pieces at the hands of the Volturi. Thankfully, it was all an illusion, but the images would be hard to forget.
