"Cloverfield" helmer Matthew Reeves will direct the follow up to "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," the lovingly titled "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes."
Reeves was considered the front-runner for the past few weeks, ever since he abruptly dropped out of Warner Bros.' planned "Twilight Zone" remake/reboot, right around the same time "Rise" director Rupert Wyatt announced he was stepping away from the franchise, presumably to direct something with fewer talking apes.
Deadline ran the exclusive today announcing Reeves' deal with Fox. The director's name had previously appeared on a shortlist that also included J Blakeson, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Jeff Nichols, Juan Antonio Bayona, Rian Johnson (ha!), and Guillermo del Toro (HA!).
"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" is still scheduled for a May 23, 2014 release date, so somebody better get Andy Serkis in a lycra unitard NOW!
