The weekend's box office results stood out for a number of reasons, and no, not all of those reasons were Channing Tatum's abdominals. "Ted" owned the box office, despite being an original concept, R-rated, and not about a superhero.
The comedic feature film debut from "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane took in $54.1 million, a record for an original R-rated comedy. The original "Hangover" previously held the record with the significantly less total of $45 million.
Both "Ted" and its competition, "Magic Mike," wildly out-performed the estimates analysts had predicted toward the end of last week. The Steven Soderbergh-directed stripper drama skewed toward female movie-goers (surprise!) and raked in $39.2 million.
The two movies hopefully made big statements about the benefits of releasing adult-oriented films with interesting concepts, since this year—per usual—the box office has been dominated by YA adaptations, TV remakes, and one great, big superhero movie.
