It's been months since Naomi Watts was first cast as Princess Diana in "Caught in Flight," and ever since we've been curious about how the "J. Edgar" actress would look as the beloved British princess. Well, our wait is over, and we've got to say we're impressed with Watts' seemingly perfect casting.
Watts has proved that she's a fantastic actress over the course of her two-decades-long career, so we never had any doubts that she would be able to pull off a portrayal of such an important royal and celebrity. But this movie largely hinges on her ability to look the part, which this first set photo shows that she clearly does. Her likeness to Princess Di has got to be a pretty big self-esteem boost for Watts, and is also a great part of the marketing campaign for the film.
Of course, the movie's subject matter is intriguing all on its own. "Caught in Flight" details the princess's affair with Dr. Hasnat Kahn, who is going to be played by Naveen Andrews. The couple was together from 1995 until shortly before her death in 1997, when she was dating Dodi Fayed. The Playlist reports that the movie will show a side of Diana that people never got to see before: "a damaged person who stalks the doctor after he ends the affair."
We're going to assume that this portrayal will likely ruffle a few feathers, but it's a story that deserves to be told based on people's continued fascination with Diana in the 15 years after her passing. We're intrigued to see how "Caught in Flight" will handle such a touchy subject matter, but it will likely be with care considering what a good job they've done to make Watts look as spot-on as possible.
