Valentine's Day is all about love, and that's why this February 14th, One Billion Rising wants you to give your love to women who often go without it.
According to the organization, one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. To fight back, One Billion Rising is inviting one billion women and the people who love them to stand up, dance, and demand an end to this violence.
Joining the movement is easy: Dance on stage or on your desk (don't get fired, though!), to loud music or the music in your iPod. Join an organized event or create your own, and be sure to take as many photos and videos as possible. Afterward, Tweet or YouTube them using the hash tag #1BillionRising, or post them directly onto the movement's Facebook page. If you're looking for songs to rise to, check out these classic girl power anthems:
+ Christina Aguilera - "Fighter"
"Fighter" celebrates women who don't give up, and overcome hard times.
+ Cyndi Lauper - "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"
One Billion Rising wants to make the female empowerment movement fun for everyone. All women deserve to live carefree, violence-free lives…and have epic 80s-themed house parties.
+ Beyoncé - "Run The World"
Who run the world?! Girls! Who run the girls?! Beyoncé!
+ Chaka Khan - "I'm Every Woman"
Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman" is about two things: girl power and big hair.
+ Alicia Keys - "Superwoman"
Alicia Keys' "Superwoman" is a female empowerment anthem for all women working hard to make their lives better for themselves and their families.
+ Tupac - "Keep Ya Head Up"
One Billion Rising isn't just about women standing up for themselves. It's also about men standing up for women, much like 'Pac did in his song "Keep Ya Head Up." Here are a few of the song's most powerful lyrics:
And since we all came from a woman
Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?
I think it's time to kill for our women
Time to heal our women, be real to our women
And if we don't we'll have a race of babies
That will hate the ladies, that make the babies
