We might have to wait until the holiday season to see the first trailer for "Pacific Rim," but that doesn't mean we won't see any teases for Guillermo del Toro's new project before then.
ComicBookMovie.com got their hands on the upcoming edition of Empire magazine which features new photos from the set of "Pacific Rim." In the scans of the images, we see del Toro directing stars Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba as they hang out in their Jaegers (a type of giant human-piloted robot) as well as Hunnam and Elba's characters shaking hands. We also finally get a chance to see the world of "Pacific Rim," even though it looks like it's been partially destroyed by some big bad monsters.
As we learned in the film's plot synopsis, "Pacific Rim" tells the story of a washed up former pilot (Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) who end up being humanity's only hope for survival when a race of monstrous creatures known as the Kaiju come and attack Earth. The Jaegers are the only things that can stand against the Kaiju, and the one gunned by Hunnam and Kikuchi ends up being Earth's last chance against the mounting apocalypse.
When we caught up with del Toro at Comic-Con, he was legitimately geeking out about how excited he was for the project.
"With Warner, I had the relationship with having prepped 'The Hobbit.' With Thomas [Tull] and Jon [Jashni at Legendary], I found an absolute dream. It was like clash of the geeks. It was fantastic," he said. "Discussing with them kaiju and robot battle sequences in an office full of toys and collectibles and posters and original art is like a game changer for me.
He continued, "It is the best experience I have ever had professionally, and I really loved creatively and in every way every second of it, so it was truly, truly a respite for the fan-man."
"Pacific Rim" also stars Charlie Day, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff and hits theaters on July 12, 2013.
