As "Spider-Man" producer Avi Arad puts it, "Video games are the comic books of today." That must be why Hollywood is so gung-ho about putting together as many video game adaptations as it can this year.

The latest to add to the list is "Metal Gear Solid," which Kotaku reports was just announced at a 25th anniversary event for the game in Tokyo. On hand were "MGS" creator Hideo Kojima and Arad, both of whom will act as producers on the new project. This "Metal Gear Solid" adaptation is reportedly set up at Columbia Pictures.

"We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed, " Arad promised fans of the franchise.

Kojima then started listing off some of his favorite Hollywood actors and filmmakers, including Matt Damon, Hugh Jackman, Ben Affleck and Christopher Nolan. "We'll tell these actors and directors who you want, and maybe they'll do it for nothing," Arad joked in response.

But maybe they will be interested. Video game adaptations are all the rage right now, and that interest seems to be renewed ever since Michael Fassbender signed on to star in and produce an "Assassin's Creed" film. Arad is attached to a number of other in-development video game adaptations including "Mass Effect," "Uncharted" and "Lost Planet." Hopefully the former chairman, CEO and founder of Marvel Studios can do for the video game industry what he did for comic books thanks to adaptations of "Spider-Man," "X-Men" and "Iron Man."

This is the second time Hollywood has attempted to crack "Metal Gear Solid." "Wag the Dog" producer Michael De Luca planned to adapt the game back in 2008, but that project ultimately fell through. We hope Arad has better luck this time around.
