You might have noticed #IDAHO2013 trending over the weekend, and, no, they weren't talking about the state! May 17 was the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (shortened to "IDAHO" online) and fun. used their Twitter handle to spread the anti-harassment, pro-acceptance message.

The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia began in 2004, and the date of May 17 was picked because it was the anniversary of when the World Health Organization stopped labeling being gay as a mental disorder. Celebrations for IDAHO went on in more than 100 nations, and the holiday has even gotten official recognition from the European Parliament. Each day, millions of people face bigotry and unequal treatment based on who they love and their gender identity, so this day has spent the last nine years spreading awareness to policymakers, the media and the public in general.

Even though the official day has passed, you can still take action. There are many orgs out there fighting against homophobia and transphobia, but I think fun. might be a little partial toward The Ally Coalition, which they started with designer Rachel Antonoff. The Ally Coalition is all about getting people from all walks of life to come together and end homophobia and transphobia, and a super easy way to get involved is to snap a pic of you proclaiming yourself as an ally. It's simple, but it's also effective. By getting involved with orgs like TAC, you can pave away for next year's IDAHO to be the best and most powerful one yet!
