Readers, this is a fair warning: we're about to give you our puppy dog eyes. But it's for a good cause, promise. We just really want you to help put a stop to puppy mills around the country. Thanks to DoSomething's Puppy Text campaign, you can learn more about how to do just that.
A puppy mill is defined by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) as "a large-scale commercial dog breeding operation that places profit over the well-being of its dogs -- who are often severely neglected -- and acts without regard to responsible breeding practices." According to the organization, there could be as many as 10,000 puppy mills operating in the US right now, with as many as 1,000 breeding dogs in one facility.
Out of the 500,000 pets sold in pet stores each year, almost all of them come from mills. When you join in on DoSomething's choose-your-own-adventure Puppy Text game, you get to act as a pet store employee who has to decide whether to "stand up against animal abuse or turn a blind eye to make a profit." At the end of the game, you'll get tips on your phone on how to fight puppy mills IRL. If saving the lives of adorable animals isn't enough incentive to play, you also have the chance to win a $3,000 scholarship! All you have to do is send the Puppy Text game to six of your friends, and you'll be entered to win. If you're ready to start playing the game, text PUPPY to 38383. The campaign just launched this week and will be live through July 26. Take action below for more ways to be a champion for animals.
