After the horrific school shooting in Newtown, the nation has been talking about different ways to hopefully prevent a tragedy like this from happening again, like gun control and better resources and understanding of mental health. Jessica Alba has stepped in with a bunch of other celebrities, including Beyoncé, Selena Gomez, Zooey Deschanel, to talk about gun control.
Jess Tweeted:
Join the cause to protect America's children and STOP gun violence: DemandAPlan.org. #FF @demandaplan #DemandAPlan
— Jessica Alba (@jessicaalba) December 21, 2012
Her link takes you to a star-studded video that starts by listing off a number of recent instances of gun violence. Jessica and others ask, "How many more?" The artists then ask that a plan be made. They want to stop the "What they might have been" talks about the victims. There's some really powerful talk, including from Beyoncé, who sounds choked up and as if she could cry.
Each day 34 people die from gun violence in America. Jessica and co. are asking you to sign a petition, and email or write to Congress and President Obama, asking them to set a plan. They set forth three suggestions for a plan: (1) If a person wants to buy a gun, they have to pass a criminal background check, (2) assault weapons and high-capacity magazines should be banned, and (3) gun trafficking ought to be a federal crime.
If you want to take part in this but aren't sure the names of your elected officials, no prob. The website will help you there. 750 mayors are calling for a plan about guns, and the number of civilians is much higher.
