Do like Gisele Bündchen, get on your bike, and grab your granola, because today marks the 40th anniversary of World Environment Day! Started by the United Nations in 1972, World Environment Day (WED) encourages green-thumbed party people to take positive environmental action worldwide.
This year's WED theme is "Green Economy: Does it Include You?" For all those who see the word "economy" and cringe (ahem, me), let's break it down. Working towards a green economy means saying, "HEY old folk from another generation, there's a new way of doing eco-friendly business in our world that can help lower carbon emissions, efficiently use our resources, and improve our day-to-day lives!" So, does this green economy include you? Hundo. In this time of high unemployment, a green economy will help create and sustain jobs PLUS save you mula in the long run.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is encouraging you to organize an activity this week (until June 8th) that shows how a green economy can include anyone and everyone across the globe. That means you, Lady Gaga, and that Spanish pen pal you had in 5th grade. Share what you did by registering your activity on the WED website and enter a chance to set the summer off right by winning a spankin' new, fuel-efficient, Kia car.
Unsure how to celebrate WED in all of its green glory? Here are a few ways we're trying to support a green economy this summer:
+ Take public transport: Let's go to the beach beach...via bus that is. Taking the bus or train will save you money, reduce emissions and let you do some serious people watching. If you're not down to ride the bus, arrange a carpool with friends!
+ Turn it off: Unplug those iPhones, iPods, and laptops when you're not using them. We know it's terrifying to imagine a world without cuddling your phone (guilty), but it legit feels great to be tech-free once in a while.
+ Get involved! Spread awareness. Whether it's joining a movement or tweeting the word, you've got a voice that needs to be heard.
