Like most summer tentpole movies, the promotional material for "After Earth," the upcoming sci-fi adventure starring the father-son duo of Will and Jaden Smith, has focused almost squarely on the action elements of the film. Essentially, it's been a lot of space ship crashes and Jaden Smith running through the jungle away from highly evolved human killers.
While director M. Night Shyamalan's hot streak is more than a decade in the rear-view mirror, there was a time when he excelled at putting quieter moments on the screen, in between shocking revelations. In the first clip from "After Earth," we get such a moment that drives home the stakes of the film.
Jaden's character Kitai Raige must retrieve a homing beacon from the tail end of their crashed ship, since it appears that his father, the perfectly name Cypher Raige, is unable to.

"After Earth" opens on May 31.
